Do you realize that you can learn a lot about how to write a blog post from reading the profiles on sites like Match.com and Plenty Of Fish. For the record this post is not an endorsement for either site but I thought it might be interesting to talk about how to write a kick ass blog post or how to write a kick ass internet dating profile because the same rules apply.
Rule number 1 be interesting!
Seriously, write like you have something to say. Trust me when I say the real you is much more interesting then the person you are pretending to be. Readers like to read content that is real and honest so if your going to write about a subject, know what your talking about. The saying fake it till you make does not apply here and your credibility is at stake; people can spot BS faster than you can attempt to dish it.
Rule number 2 smile!
When I write I smile and talk to myself, (but that is another story all together!) Seriously have fun and don’t take your self to serious even if you are blogging about something serious; unless you blog about morbid shit than instead of of smiling, seek help.
In regards to your dating profile make sure that the 1o year old photo of you that is 15 pounds lighter and with more hair is plastered with a big ole smile. If someone wanted to date someone that looked miserable they would still be with their ex!
Rule number 3, Have a good title and opening line!
I love long romantic walks on the beach or looking for the perfect so and so should never ever come out of your mouth period with an ! Think of your title as somethings that screams read me or date me. If the first line of your profile reads single independent woman seeks nice man, there is a reason you are still single, change it immediately.
If your blogging for business I highly recommend your read Copy Blogger How to write Magnetic Headlines, The headlines may seem cheesy but they work. Copy Blogger writes:
Your headline needs to bold and interesting enough to catch someones attention. Without a compelling headline that can turn a browser into a reader, the rest of your words may as well not even exist. So, from a copywriting and content marketing standpoint, writing great headlines is a critical skill.
Rule 4, Remember its about content!
If content is king then quality content is king to the nth degree! Tell me what makes you, well you; readers and prospective suitors want to hear the behind the blow stuff. (I can’t believe that I just used the word suitor.) Tell me something interesting about your industry give me the inside scoop! Let me in on the secret, Inquiring minds want to know.
A few moments ago I stated that I talk to myself when I write. I do this because I want my post to read like a conversation. Remember your post/profile needs to read like a real person wrote it. You can read my post on creating remarkable content for more pointers on writing remarkable content.
Rule 5, Size does matter!
In this case shorter might be better, but not too short. I like to keep my posts between 300 and 800 words on average. That being said, say what needs to be said and leave the extra for another post. One of the biggest mistakes that people make in my opinion is going on and on and on, seriously know when to shut up!
Rule 6 Ask!
Stop beating around the bush if you want someone to do something you have to ask them to do it. Every blog post should have a call to action at the end of it. People are not mind readers and don’t assume that you and your readers are on the same page a few examples of calls to action would be:
- Please share this post with your friends
- Please ReTweet
-
Please let me know what you think.
So with that in mind please let me know your thoughts below.
Nice post! I like the comparison to the dating profile.
I agree with the title of rule five, but not necessarily the conclusion. Why do you see shorter posts to be better?
I would say it depends on the niche, but for any technical subject, I think they should be longer.

Hi Robert thanks for the comment. In my opinion I am a fan of shorter posts between 300 and 800 words in length. It has been my experience that when people start blogging creating content can be a challenge. Shooting for 300 words serves two purposes. The first is it is an attainable goal, The second is for seo purposes. Remember most people have short attention spans and overwhelming them with War & Peace might be over kill. If however you are dead set on writing war and peace, then my recommendation is breaking it up to multiple posts. Again personal preference. Thanks again for your response and the link I will defiantly read it.

Marc,
I really like this post. I remember when I first started to blog, this was one of the first things you told me to do. It’s great practice in blogging. Thanks for the reminder.
I can envision the title now…Would I want to date myself?
