What are you posting on Twitter right now?

What are you doing now? That is the question you are asked when logged in to your  Twitter. account. If you are going to start incorporating Twitter into your marketing campaign you should focus your efforts on posting interesting or remarkable content. Your followers don’t care about irrelevant details they want to know about you and your business. They want to feel connected to your brand. You are in business to make money. But being in business also means communicating with your customers, clients and the people that you do business with. Twitter is a  great communication tool that can help you communicate your message to your customers, clients and the masses and also allow all those people to communicate with you.

One of the biggest mistakes business owners make when they first start incorporating Twitter in their business is that all they do is tweet about their business, and then more about their business and then even more about their business. It reminds me  of  a little kid who is screaming “Hey look at me look at me, hey I am over here! Look at me.” This gets very old quickly. Think about using Twitter the same way you would as if you were in a real conversation with someone that you just met.

Find common ground, talk about shared experiences, ask questions, listen, engage and so forth.

There are no hard fast rules for tweeting but in my opinion you should follow some of Twitters “best practices.” for tweeting. Think about this have you ever spoken to someone and all they did was talk about themselves and how great they are and didn’t listen to anything you said. How long would it take you before you tuned out. The same holds true in the Twitter-sphere.

I recently almost made the decision to  closed down my Twitter account and started over. After some thought I have decided to be more diligent in policing my feed and give spammers the boot. The problem with spam is it that it takes away from quality content. You cant avoid spam but you don’t have to pay any attention to it either. Your goal should be to build a community of champions for your brand or service. A good way to do this is to split up your tweets.

I recommend a ratio of 3 to 1, which means for every tweet that you make regarding your products or service your next two tweets  need to be about something other than you. This might be relevant industry or other information you find useful. It may be something that benefits your community, Think about engaging your community.Remember it is all about variety, and keeping it fresh, lively and most of all interesting. I am interested in hearing your thoughts.
