I read a great blog post titled, Five Lies Of Social Media Marketing. Lie number 1 states “Many small businesses equate the number of “likes” or “followers” on branded social-media platforms to success, not realizing that it’s the quality of those likes and followers that is important. More people signing up to view your message doesn’t necessarily equate an increase in sales or even a bump in long-term or sustainable brand recognition.” I couldn’t agree more.
Jesus worked in the marketing department for a rather large start up company. He was tasked by his boss to start a new marketing campaign around their new product called Salvation. In order for Salvation to be successful Jesus knew that he needed to build a strong brand identity, educate people on the benefits of embracing salvation, make it accessible to anybody that wanted it, easy to distribute, be viewed as unique, simple to understand, and most importantly get early adapters to help spread the word.
What strategy did you use to bring your product, brand or service to market?
As Jesus began his marketing campaign he met a man named John and demonstrated the features and benefits of Salvation. John was so excited after meeting Jesus and learning about his groundbreaking product that he wanted to set up a meeting between Jesus and two of his closest associates.
The next morning Jesus met with all 3 men to discuss a possible partnership. During the meeting Jesus spoke to the men about his marketing plan, projected growth, ROI, sustainability, etc. Each man was also given the opportunity to try the product. The meeting was a success! John and his associates immediately decided to partner with Jesus to spread the word about his amazing product and service.
How passionate are people about your product and service? Are the willing to tell everybody they know about you?
One day at a local networking event, a man by the name of Andrew overheard John speaking to a crowd of people about the benefits of Salvation. When the presentation ended Andrew asked John where he could get his hands on some and how much it cost. John told Andrew that he would introduce him to Jesus and that he would work out the details.
Andrew spoke with Jesus in detail about his business model and product. Jesus gave a sample to Andrew and soon Andrew became a follower. Andrew gave a sample to his brother Simon. Simon who also began to experience the benefits of Salvation and became a follower like his brother. Jesus and his disciples began building a social network of followers, all with the mission of spreading the good word & Salvation throughout the land.
The purpose of social networking is to share thoughts, experiences, opinions and information about a product or brand. Not to sell!
Influencers like Phillip soon jumped on board, followed by Nathanael and 6 others. With their help Salvation quickly went viral and a community of brand champions was born. As you can imagine it didn’t take very long for Jesus and Salvation to become household names. As his social network grew, Jesus became synonymous with Salvation, he owned it and spoke passionately about it.
Jesus is synonymous with salvation. UPS is synonymous with the color brown Are you synonymous with your product, brand, or service?
Jesus believed that people needed salvation so much he was willing to give it away for free to any one who asked. When he spoke about salvation at conferences and networking events, his voice was filled with passion, the more passionate he became the more he engaged his following grew.
When you talk about your product, business or service is your passion contagious? Does it make people want to learn more about what you do? If not it should.
As Jesus and Salvation became more popular his critics became more vocal and skeptical of his products, services, and claims. Some people refused to welcome him to their conferences and networking events. Some even began trashing salvation’s reputation every chance they got! He always answered his critics with conviction and stayed true to his beliefs.
Don’t be scared about negative comments regarding your business everybody has a voice and a opinion. When you receive a negative comment make sure you address it immediately in a courteous & professional manner. This will show that you are committed to your business and customer service.
Good brands not only sell themselves but they have staying power. Jesus has long since departed the material world, but his message and the product live on. Jesus was successful because he connected with his followers, he spoke passionately and believed wholeheartedly in salvation. Jesus not only had a great product but offered his clients something of value, he gave unselfishly of himself and asked for very little in return. It has been over 2000 thousand years since Jesus and his followers introduced salvation to the world, and it continues to grow in popularity to this very day.
How would you rate the effectiveness of your messaging?
Does your message and product resonate with the people your connected to?
Are you passionate and connected to your product?
Does your product add value to peoples lives?
How do you deal with some people rejecting or discounting what you have to say?
I look forward to your thoughts.
Wow Marc! Quite a succinct look at social media marketing. This resonates with me as a pastor’s wife and social media coordinator. Social media success comes with the conversion factor. No conversion, no ROI. Hmm… I’m going to keep thinking about this one
Thank you Miranda I appreciate your comments. I think conversion is the disconnect, too many people love people to like them they just don’t know what to do with them after that or understand what a conversion is. I think it might be time to write a post on it.
This is an amazing post, Marc!
Skepticism & criticism is the norm, so educating people is key. Stay true to what you believe, conviction and passion is contagious. Lead by example and those that are ready to receive the message will follow.
Thanks for reminding us of Jesus and sharing his message.
I just can’t leave this post without quoting the refrain from a song I like to sing at church. It’s all about salvation:
“Give me ears to listen, Give me eyes to see, Give me words to speak and show your face to me.”
Jesus loves you!
Renee
Thank you Renee, I appreciate your comments and yes you could say this post was inspired by devine inspiration.
Love this. “the negative comments would only better educate people in making an informed decision about salvation” – brilliant. I’m sharing this one. GREAT analogy.
Sometimes negativity is the best teacher
OMG! Wow talk about an amesome spin on a taken-for-granted information and selling procedure. I could see myself harking back to this analogy during my soc-media worskops. Well done…
Thank you Josie, I appreciate it I wrote that after some divine inspiration at church
